This app was developed by an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist to facilitate the acquisition and use of early developing semantic categories and vocabulary. It is suitable for children who are typically developing as well as those with language delays. The app focuses on 28 "superordinate" categories, including a wide range of topics such as appliances, body parts, buildings, cleaning supplies, clothing, colors, desserts, dinosaurs, drinks, farm animals, fruits, furniture, insects, jungle animals, kitchen utensils, letters, make-believe objects, musical instruments, ocean animals, numbers, people, shapes, school supplies, sports equipment, tools, toys, transportation and vegetables. Each superordinate category contains 8 subordinate members which are portrayed through visually appealing illustrated images.
The app offers 5 engaging activities to choose from:
- SORTING: The user selects between 1 to 3 semantic categories to focus on. The subordinate members are displayed at the top of the screen and the user is instructed to drag each item to its corresponding category container.
- FIND IT!: In this game, the user selects one pictured item from a set of three that belongs to a specific semantic category. The game consists of ten trials and provides a percentage score based on accuracy. This game allows targeting of 2 to 5 semantic categories.
- WHICH DOES NOT BELONG?: During this game, the user is presented with 2 pictured items from the same superordinate category and one pictured item from a different superordinate category. The user must identify the item that does not belong with the other two. Similar to the "Find It!" game, this also consists of ten trials and provides a percentage score at the end. The user can target 2 to 5 semantic categories in this game.
- MEMORY MATCH: This mode allows the user to select a category and engage in a visually stimulating memory game with the associated pictured category members. This adds an element of fun to vocabulary practice.
- FLASHCARDS: The flashcard mode can be used to introduce or practice naming members of each category. Each category contains 8 vocabulary words, providing ample opportunity for vocabulary expansion.
